After finishing a career as an online poker player, Christopher found a love for coding whilst working at his family’s business. Struggling with the learning environment he began researching coding bootcamps where he could learn in an immersive environment. Christopher graduated from Makers in May 2018 and now works as a full-time software developer at Spektrix.
“I was an professional online poker player. I became unsatisfied so I quit and figured out what I wanted to do. Time’s too short to be bored. I fell into coding while working for my folks but I struggled with the learning environment so started researching bootcamps. Makers stood out as one of the best so I decided to throw my hat in the ring and apply.
There aren’t enough words to describe the experience. The course, the camaraderie within your cohort, the support you get from the careers team – the experience in its entirety was exhilarating. There was never a day where I didn’t want to come in and spend time among my peers. I couldn’t get enough. I’m an introverted person so I found the thought of pair programming and group work both exciting and terrifying before I joined.
Burnout and managing your mental wellbeing is challenging. Programming is mentally challenging and it can be easy to run out of gas. For future Makers, don’t give up too easily but don’t be afraid to ask for help so long as you’ve explored all the avenues you can. Take part in all of the activities as well — even if you don’t think you’re cut out for yoga, I think everyone can surprise themselves. Nothing’s hard, it’s just new.”
