Lights, Camera, Code: Mathilde’s journey from media to tech

“The partnership between Makers and businesses was really helpful. To say, we have these people, they crushed the bootcamp and now you can mould them with how you work and with your technology — that’s why I picked Makers.”

Mathilde Ferrand Coeurderoy graduated from Makers in 2018 and is now lead engineering manager at Clearscore, but how did she get there?

A chance encounter

Before embarking on her tech career Mathilde had a successful career in entertainment and community management in Paris. However, the hectic nature of the industry and her introverted personality made her reconsider her career path. She crossed paths with a group of engineers and the world of technology sparked an interest that brought her to London to pursue a career in tech.

“I wanted to be part of a craft of makers. Working in entertainment and events was really draining. I’m an introvert and it involved a lot of talking to people and random hours — that didn’t really fit me. However, when I was working for SNCF, I was organising hackathons on trains between London and France and I met a group of software engineers, who told me about bootcamps in London. I started to save money, moved to London and learnt programming at Makers.”

Breaking into tech with Makers

Career switching can be a challenge, but Mathilde believed in Makers ability to bridge the gap between aspiring engineers and the industry. She was inspired by the success stories of Makers alum and the career support graduates receive.

“I met two alumni who were working at the Financial Times. They really enjoyed their experience at Makers and there was a lot of support to find a job. Hearing that gave me confidence because I know from experience it’s not always easy to be a junior because a company wants to hire experienced people, but the partnership between Makers and businesses was really helpful.”

The Makers community

“Between the staff and my cohort — everyone was really supportive… I would have not been successful without the people around me.”

Mathilde described her Makers experience as intense but rewarding. The emphasis on pair programming and the close-knit community took her outside her comfort zone, but the support from both staff and peers was invaluable.

Becoming skilled in learning quotient and developing a growth mindset at Makers was key to overcoming imposter syndrome and achieving success.

She acknowledges the importance of self-care and balance in the tech world, as she found solace in yoga during her time at Makers. The practice offered a break from coding, fostering self-awareness and mindfulness, which she believes are essential in her role today.

Navigating a non-linear tech career

“Don’t limit yourself to what you’re doing today. There is no linear path in tech. Embrace the journey and don’t put a ceiling above your head.”

Mathilde’s progression from a software engineer at Ford Motor company after graduation to lead engineering manager at ClearScore is a testament to her adaptability and willingness to explore different roles. She advises individuals to seek diverse experiences, network with people from various backgrounds and keep an open mind about the twists and turns their career may take.

“Take your time, focus on understanding and showcase your potential for growth. The tech industry is vast and career paths can be fluid, offering ample room for growth and change.”

Years after graduating Mathilde finds herself continuously evolving in the ever-changing tech landscape and utilising the supportive network of Makers alum. Makers guidance and resources have been invaluable throughout her career and helped shape her into the tech professional she is today.
