"Diversity is at the heart of Makers, and its focus on applicants’ potential makes it a truly purpose-led organisation. It shows people how technology projects work while giving them the skills required to deliver them."
Piumi Mitchell, Head of Social Impact Partnerships, Deloitte
Featured in Deloitte's Annual Review - the UK's most ambitious government digital programme needed an inclusive resourcing approach. Here's how Makers delivered it.
The Challenge
When Deloitte was contracted by the Government Digital Service to support GOV.UK One Login - a programme to give millions of UK citizens a single, secure way to access government services; they needed a resourcing approach that went beyond traditional hiring.
The objective was twofold:
-
Deliver critical national digital infrastructure, and
-
Fulfill Social Value commitments by boosting regional jobs and skills in Bristol and Manchester
The Solution
Building on a ten-year relationship that has created over 150 software engineers, Deloitte partnered with Makers to uncover talent from social mobility cold spots who had been overlooked by the traditional education system.
Local candidates were put through an intensive 16-week software engineering bootcamp, delivered by Makers. Once trained, they were embedded directly into the Deloitte GDS project team - gaining vital on-the-job experience while actively contributing to GOV.UK One Login delivery.
"Collaborating with Makers, we are able to engage diverse tech talent and strengthen Deloitte's commitment to Social Value. By providing the chance for Makers engineers to be deployed on GDS engagements, we could demonstrate our commitment to equal opportunity and economic equality."
Olivia Parkinson, Associate Director, Deloitte Digital
